Outtie #6 (The Pumpkin Challenge)

On page 75 of Fractalia, the youth (Darren, Sandra, Neelon, and Maria) are trapped in a deep pit with no way out. They haven't had water in two days! They have to figure out how to use the things around them in an unusual way so they can stay alive.

Just like the characters in the book, I want you to practice using normal things in unusual ways.

For this outtie, you will have to use a pumpkin in an unusual way. What unusual thing can you make with a pumpkin? Or, what new thing can you do with a pumpkin?

In your "invention," you can use anything else you want to with your pumpkin. Also, you can use more than one pumpkin.

I will start you off with two examples. So, the first two comments are from me.

"A Pumpkin in the Olympics?"

There is an Olympic sport called curling where they slide heavy stones on ice toward a target. The stones have curved handles on top of them so they are easy to grab.

I am going to play curling with pumpkins. The pumpkins need to have curved stems on top of them so I can easily slide them down the ice just like they do in the Olympics.

"A Pumpkin Raft"

Pumpkins float. Suppose I am a pumpkin farmer and there is a flood. I see that my pumpkins are floating. I put a lot of pumpkins in a big net so they float together. Then, I lay boards across them to build a raft. I float on my pumpkin raft during the flood!

A Pumpkin Lamp.

You cut out the bottom of a pumpkin and take out the seeds and all that other stuff. Then you stick a light bulb with a battery on a stick and put the stick inside the pumpkin. You could also carve the front for more light to come out!!!

Pumpkin bowling

Roll pumpkins to knock over some bowling pins. Maybe you can use pumpkin stems as the pins. Maybe you can use gourds.

Pumpkin Piggybank

Cut a slot in the top so you can drop your coins in. To get them out when it's full, you'll have to smash the pumpkin just like you would a real piggybank.

Pumpkin Ring Toss

Cut out the top with the stem and that is the post that you throw at. To make the rings, cut completely across the pumpkin in thin slices and you will make rings of different sizes.

Pumpkin Hat Rack

Put a little shelf on the wall and put a pumpkin on it sideways so the stem sticks straight out. Hang your hat there. I guess you could hang your coat there too.

Carve different faces in a bunch of pumpkins. Make a happy face, sad face, scary face, and so on. Stack them on top of each other to make a totem pole.

Nesting Dolls

Get pumpkins of very different sizes. Hollow them out and carve faces in them. Now, put the smallest pumpkin inside the next biggest one. Put that one inside the next biggest one. Keep doing this until you put them all inside the biggest pumpkin you have. You now have nesting dolls using pumpkins.

Hollow out a pumpkin and hang a small wind chime from the lid. Cut holes on all sides of the pumpkin to let the wind blow through to make the wind chimes move.
